Protest - Canberra 29th May 2006

Canberra - Protest 29th May 2006

It was May 29th 2006. All the Tamils all around Australia decided to do something for our people back home and let the world and Australian government know what is really happening to our Tamil people back home and we all care about them. There were about 1500+ Tamil people in front of the parliament house in Canberra. There were about 1000 people from Sydney, 200 people from Melbourne and then the rest from Queensland, Adelaide and Canberra.

I was very disappointed with our people and how many people turned out for the event that day… especially from Melbourne… I know it’s a Monday and most of my friends’ excuse was that they can’t take leave… Well... they take leave when they are sick… and they take leave when they have their personal problems and when they feel too lazy to go to work… but they don’t want to take leave just one day for the people back home… People are dying everyday there and if we don’t voice out who else going to do it? Most of us came here on refugee status because of what happened and what’s going on back home and people forget their past. Most of them don’t want to look back… it is very sad, because we are the victim and our brethren are the victims and most of us still don’t want to do anything about it.

If it’s Sri Lanka or India I can understand why nobody wants to come for the protest, because if you voice your opinion there your head will be chopped off… but here in Australia you have the right for your opinion and speech… then why can’t you scream out and let the world know what’s really going on there… most of our Tamil people are selfish… they want to Study hard, work hard and buy property and have their own selfish life… most of us don’t care about what is going on in the world…

I was talking to my dad other day, and asked him to give me my cousin’s details’ who got killed in Jaffna and also his refugee status was rejected and he was deported from UK few years back… since my parents live in UK, I asked them to get all his details and give it to me so that I can write a letter to British embassy about what they have done to my cousin… but my dad was saying, just leave it and don’t get involve in these things… look at this… I mean… look at the way our people thinking… they just want to stay out of everything… but everyone wants freedom and everyone wants harmony but nobody willing to commit themselves or their kids in the course of freedom or harmony… they just want to sit on their arse and they want someone else to do things for them, and they want someone else to do all the sacrifices for their pleasure and freedom.

I was disappointed with the Australian Medias no media telecasted/wrote/broadcasted (Except the Tamil medias) what happened on the 29th May… there were channel 7 and SBS… I saw them with my own eyes… but they didn’t show anything… I just cannot understand why…???
